Under the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) you can take your dog, cat and even ferret abroad with you, but just like you they will need a valid passport. The minimum requirements are a microchip so that your pet can be identified and a rabies vaccination. Some countries require additional tests and paperwork and some travel companies will require a 'fit to travel' certificate.
On returning to the UK you will also need tapeworm treatment certification.
We also strongly recommend that when travelling you consider:
- Parasite control as depending on the area you are travelling to your pet maybe at risk of contracting serious insect-borne diseases.
- Travel health insurance for your pet whilst they are abroad with you.
It is your responsibility to check all travel requirements and the timescales required to obtain these. The best source of up to date information is the Pet Passport Helpline Tel: 0370 241 1710.
